Just because school is out does not mean a rest from School District happenings. Summer is a great time to kick start your involvement!
Announcements are added regularly to the School District website, www.upperdarbysd.org. Please note that even if you cannot attend a public meeting or feel uncomfortable asking questions in an open forum, you can still comment or ask questions via email to the School Board directors as a whole, which includes a copy to the Superintendent, at firstname.lastname@example.org
As our community anticipates the School District Facilities Study that is due to be released as soon as July, and may drive many future decisions, here are some other happenings:
School Board Vacancy
Recently-elected School Board Director Brian Dietzler resigned his position, and the School Board conducted candidate interviews on June 23rd. A vote to fill the vacant seat with one of the three candidates, Alex Brown, Ed Brown or Vince Gordon, will take place on June 28th, immediately following the previously scheduled School Board Committee Meetings. An agenda for the Committee Meetings will be posted here. For more details about Dietzler’s resignation, visit: http://www.delcotimes.com/article/DC/20160609/NEWS/160609675.
School District 2016-2017 Budget Adopted
During a Special Meeting on June 23rd, the School Board adopted the proposed Final Budget by a vote of 7-1. The 2016-2017 budget holds the line on taxes, adds some support positions, and restores some positions curtailed previously, while spending some of the fund balance. The budget is available for review on the School District website: http://www.upperdarbysd.org/business-office-sp-29247/budget.

Summer Recreation Opportunities
If you are still searching for quality programs for your child this summer, please note that the School District published the following compilation of recreation and daycare programs available locally: http://www.upperdarbysd.org/recreational-day-care.
At the final School Board meeting of the academic year, the top 45 students from the senior class, or the top five percent, were recognized for their outstanding academic achievement. Almost one fifth of that group listed participation in Drumline as one of their high school accomplishments. At this time, it seems that the class of 2016 could be the last class to list such an accomplishment, as it was announced publicly in early May (without the opportunity for public input) that this extra-curricular program would be discontinued.
During the June 23rd Special Meeting of the School Board, convened to adopt the Final Budget for 2016-2017, a parent asked if one of the already-budgeted new music positions could serve as a director for the District’s Drumline program. This nationally lauded program has brought positive, international recognition to our School District and exemplifies the superior opportunities that Upper Darby High School offers.
