Administrative Appointments
Upper Darby School District (UDSD) announced several appointments of existing personnel to fill leadership positions. An interim appointment was made to fill the Beverly Hills Middle School principal opening; the interim principal was not previously employed by the District. Elementary Instructional Time
A September 3, 2013 article from the Daily Times, reported that, “Portions of the Upper Darby School District Academic Realignment Plan unveiled in April 2012 have been reversed with little fanfare.” Reversal article.

Following publication of the article, UDPC member Andrea Gallo contacted UDSD administration to clarify information in the article about co-teaching, attributed to UDSD Public Information Coordinator Dana Spino. Administration confirmed what was stated at the recent School Board meeting: Homeroom teachers and related arts specialists will not co-teach this year.

Unlike the realigned related arts curriculum students experienced during the 2012-2013 school year, this school year, all elementary students will have dedicated, once-weekly instructional time in the related arts of art, music and physical education. The time allotment is 30 minutes, which is a reduction from 2011-2012 levels. The District is continuing training in authentic Arts Integration for both homeroom teachers and related arts specialists, and students will have dedicated weekly instructional time for Social Studies or Science.

Upper Darby Parent Coalition continues to advocate for restoring the Library program.

High School Student Schedules; Parent Portal
The District phased in a new information system over the spring and summer. Although school is underway, the High School student schedules are forth-coming; the parent portal module, according to the District website, is also coming soon. Stay tuned for more details.

State Survey
The following information is taken from the District website:
“The Pennsylvania Department of Education is requesting that parents who currently (or within the last year) have a student receiving specially designed instruction through gifted education services in Pennsylvania public schools complete a survey. As part of the study called for by House Resolution 139 (HR 139), the Pennsylvania Legislative Budget and Finance Committee is attempting to gain input from parents of gifted students through an online survey. The survey is voluntary and will be available for completion through September 5, 2013.”

2013-2014 Parent Forum Dates
This year, the District calendar shows multiple entries titled, “Parent Forum.” The first Forum is scheduled for September 5th at 6:30 p.m., in the Upper Darby High School Board Room, accessible via the Main Entrance of the High School. The topic of the Sept. 5th Parent Forum is the recently approved partial waiver from the Federal mandate “No Child Left Behind.” An explanation about the new School Performance Profile (SPP), which results from the waiver, will also be provided .
